The Death Gate Cycle

It has probably been twenty years since I last read The Death Gate Cycle, a seven book series written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I recently reread the series and here my quick impressions and past remembrances about each book. This is less of a review of the series (which as a whole is good and worth a read) and more just my musings of each book, ala Harry Potter Movie Marathon Highlights.

Dragon Wing:

The Air World. Definitely the book I remembered the most about, although that isn’t saying much for everything I forgot. The world building is great and the mystery around the Sartans and the Patryns really kept me going. In hindsight, the renaming of dwarves to dregs was pointless, as all the other books refer to them as dwarves, and even when they come back to this planet, they have started calling themselves dwarves.

Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary: A Novel

Amazon’s description:

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone. Or does he?

Andy Weir’s novels always end with the subtitle “: A Novel” I don’t know why but it seems redundant.

Jack’s Bad Movies: The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015)

IMDB’s Description:

When he is betrayed by a trusted friend, Mathayus (Victor Webster) must marshal all his strength and cunning to outwit a formidable opponent who will stop at nothing to unlock a supreme ancient power.

My only previous experience with the Scorpion King was in The Mummy Returns. I’ve been absent from the franchise, until now. The movie opens with some guards, guarding something, and then Drazen (Will Kemp) shows up in a panic and says he is being pursued by the Scorpion King, who ends up being Mathayus (Victor Webster). Although they occasionally call him by this title, it isn’t clear to me why he is known as the Scorpion King. They defeat four guards and then enter the temple? and Indiana Jones style try to steal some object. They get trapped by a cage, and then the same four guards come into the place and they fight them again. I was under the impression they had killed those guys outside, but I guess not. In fact, this movie goes out of its way to make sure that very few people actually get killed in these battles. This movie is nothing if not extremely predictable. For most of the movie I would casually remark ‘I’ll bet this happens next’ and it did.

Underappreciated posts

New user ferjsoto42yahoocom posted a number of questions and answers about Lewis Carroll’s Alice books during March 2021. Most of them were heavily downvoted, for some reason, but I enjoyed learning interesting things from some deep Q&A about a classic of fantasy literature which has been under-appreciated on this site. Favourites include:

I found it very sad that so many interesting Q&A were so poorly received on this site. The SFF community has historically had something of an aversion to self-answers, although they’re explicitly allowed by policy, but surely this is an excellent way for an expert in a particular work of sci-fi/fantasy to share their interesting knowledge with us?

I quite liked this one. Like my Matrix animals answer, it required a deep dive into the Harry Potter films and a frame-by-frame (if you’ll excuse the pun) analysis of the characters who appear in the backgrounds.

Is Harry Potter the only student with glasses?

It also had some great answers (from TheLethalCarrot and MBEllis) that focused on the books and the video games.
